NEWS ~ 2008 More than 100 turn out for Striper Tourney at Fox Hill Yacht Club The Fox Hill Yacht Club recently held its fifth annual Striper Tournament. The tournament, open to all, raises money for the club’s scholarship fund, as well as the Friendship Club of Saugus. The Friendship Club provides social opportunities for the developmentally-disabled young adults throughout the year. More than 110 fishermen turned out to fish both Saturday and Sunday. Leo Maggioli took first place overall, with a fish weighing in at 44.3 pounds. Second place went to Art Nigro, whose catch weighed 40.55 pounds. Russ Burgess pulled in a third place fish, at 37.85 pounds, but also earned top billing from Sea Tow, Inc. The membership-based rescue service awarded a cash prize to the heaviest fish caught by one of their members. SeaTow Captain Steve Winkler awarded the prize to Burgess at the closing ceremonies. For the juniors division, 15-year-old Kevin Martin pulled in a 19-pound fish to take top honors. Sophia Fondulis, 7, won the youth division, with a 35.50-pound striper. Jared Concilio’s 19.8-pound fish took second place, and Hunter Nigro came in third, with a fish weighing 19.65 pounds. Sophia also earned the Richard O. Holt Perinneal trophy, which is awarded each year to the child with the biggest catch from both days of the tournament. Richard Holt of Holt Manufacturing in Saugus, created the award to help promote and encourage fishing as a family sport. The tournament ended with a lively cookout and party, hosted by the FHYC, featuring the local band “Playing with Fire.”
